Mary Hadden from Kettering, Northamptonshire

Samuel and Mary ROSE who were aged 24 and 26 respectively arrived at Australind on 18 Mar 1841 on the 'Parkfield'. Their son Samuel ROSE was aged 4.

This family had moved from Australind to Doungup in the Stirling Estate and it was here that Mary ROSE died on 30 Mar 1850 Entry 26 following the birth of Mary Matilda. The Rev Wollaston mentioned in his 'Albany Journal' a year later of her christening on one of his travels through the diocese. 'Divine Service at Roberts, evening hymn sung and sermon; baptised and received two children - one of these infants was poor Mrs Rose's at whose birth she died - her husband still deeply feels his loss and the poor man could hardly speak to me.'

The Clifton in the names of the Rose family was conferred on the children of Samuel & Mary when they were christened. Due to the failure of Marshall Waller Clifton's Australind plans those who came out as migrants were given the chance to lease and later purchase land to farm. This was what Samuel Rose did and held land at Minninup and further south at Doungup on the Stirling estate - land which had been granted to the former Governor Stirling.
Marshall Clifton offered to be Godfather to Samuel's children when they were christened and as a mark of respect Samuel & Mary included Clifton in their names. It was continued for some generations but I doubt there are any Rose family with it now. ref Jeannine Hendrich

It was a blessing to both for mutual support when the young widow Emma of John DELAPORTE who was struggling to look after her six surviving children married the widower Samuel ROSE with his four children on 10 May 1855. There were no children of this marriage.
