Blind Freddy was a very special and interesting character

Freddy was 8 years old when the Capel School opened, he was walking home from school with his brothers and sisters through the glaring sun and hordes of bush flies when he complained of sore eyes (a common problem in summer).     A neighbour suggested to his mother to bathe his eyes with blue-stone water (copper sulphate).    The remedy seared the soft tissue and made Freddy totally blind.  Eventually he recovered and set about cheerfully coping with life.     He developed a 6th sense that led him round every bump, stump, rock, tree and break-away riverbank on the farm.     He was able to do his share of chores and was a great favourite with all the cows - with whom he had a special understanding.

Of the 9 sons and 2 daughters, blind Fred and his brother Richard inherited the old mixed farm on the north bank of Capel River.  With the help of various nephews and nieces they kept the farm running smoothly for many years.  Not long before Richard died, they moved to a tiny wooden shanty on the edge of the old road into Capel.  Fred died there in 1941 at the age of 85.
