WO Leslie Thomas Hamerston 431622 RAAF, 9th Aircrew Holding Unit Little is known about Ada’s early life. Prior to her marriage to Thomas Hamerston at Frankland River in 1908, Ada was performing home duties most probably in the house of her stepfather, Tom Parsons, at Mongetup, a farming property adjoining the Frankland River. When Mongetup was put on the market in September 1994, it was described as a “prime mixed cattle, sheep and grain property in a keenly sought area”, comprising 1110 hectares (2742 acres) with a four-bedroom homestead, machinery shed, 1500 bushel silo, shearing shed and large set of cattle yards. Following marriage, Ada lived successively at Cranbrook, at Bateman’s place in Tom’s Cottage, at Mirinup in Sunny Side, at Laverton on Mt Weld Station, and at Armadale in Dunromin. Ada and Tom Hamerston became the guardians of their first child, Gilbert Leslie, some time after his birth to George and Ellen Wilson of Tenterden. Gilbert remained an only child in his adoptive family and died at the age of eight from diphtheria. Gilbert was much loved and much grieved by Ada who long kept the anniversary of his death by drawing the blinds and weeping throughout the day of February 6.
