ROBERT WILLIAM CLIFTON ROSE, Private 941, 11th Battalion., Australian Infantry, A.I.F. died on Wednesday 31 March 1915. Age 21 Buried: East Mudros Military Cemetery, Lemnos, Greece. Grave or Reference Panel Number: I. F. 108. Son of Samuel Clifton Rose and Susannah Maria Rose, of Capel, Western Australia. Mudros is on the island of Lemnos in the north-east Aegean. Because of its position, the island of Lemnos played an important part in the campaigns against Turkey during the First World War. It was occupied by a force of marines on 23 February 1915 in preparation for the military attack on Gallipoli, and Mudros became a considerable Allied camp. The 1st and 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospitals, the 3rd Australian General Hospital and other medical units were stationed on both sides of Mudros Bay and a considerable Egyptian Labour Corps detachment was employed. After the evacuation of Gallipoli, a garrison remained on the island and the 1st Royal Naval Brigade was on Lemnos, Imbros and Tenedos for the first few months of 1916. On 30 October 1918, the Armistice between the Entente Powers and Turkey was signed at Mudros. East Mudros Military Cemetery was begun in April 1915 and used until September 1919. It contains 885 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, 86 of them unidentified. Ref Sheryl Knight Trooper Alan Clifton Rose 64283, 13th Light Horse, 24/06/1918, RTA on 29 Apr 1919. Private Charles Clifton Rose W73699, 9th Northam Battalion Defence Corps Susanna HIGGINS and Samuel Clifton ROSE purchased land at Stratham. In the summer of 1890 Samuel, Susannah and their 2 young daughters slipped over to the coast so Sam could do a spot of fishing and Susannah and the girls, Coral and Minna, could splash around in the cool shallows. Susannah was expecting again. Sam Rose Snr farmed 'Doungup' all through the war with the help of Susannah and the younger children. When Sam Jnr and Charles returned from the war, their father made them full partners in the farm. However, the property could not support them all so John went off to be a policeman and Charles enrolled as a schoolteacher. Around 1923 Sam Jnr opened a tobacconist shop in Capel.
